From Seres to Silk...

Once used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans to evoke the distant lands of China and the treasures they bore—above all, silk—Seres speaks to the origins of the Silk Road.

Shorthand for the fabled “land of silk,” Seres represents a world where craftsmanship and beauty were woven through every thread.

Treasured for over 5,000 years, silk's origins trace back to ancient China, where the silkworm was first domesticated.

Across generations, the process remained a closely guarded secret, known only to Chinese artisans. The labour-intensive craft—reeling the fine threads, weaving them into textiles—elevated silk to a symbol of wealth, refinement, and status.

Silk: A new age

In the Middle Ages, two monks travelled east, drawn by whispers that this luminous fabric was born not of plants or magic, but of silkworms themselves.

Carrying hollowed canes filled with silkworm eggs and mulberry shoots, they concealed what the world had never seen, crossing mountains and deserts with a material so rare it reshaped perception itself.

From this passage between East and West, the path that would later be known as the Silk Road was formed—connecting cultures, inspiring exchange, and laying the foundations of modern trade. From a single thread grew a legacy of beauty that continues to endure.

A new legacy

With its relatively young modern history, and as an art demanding years of refinement, silk production has never taken a foothold in Australia, particularly as the nation has undergone industrial decline in recent decades.

Today, Australian Silk Group is Australia's leading silk producer and supplier through their integrated network of businesses that focus on the production and distribution of uniquely Australian cruelty free silk and associated products.

Paving the new silk road

The name Seresilk was chosen as an ode to Seres: honouring the history of silk, while reflecting the purity of Australia.

As a palindrome, it mirrors itself—symbolic of silk’s historical importance and its enduring role in connecting East and West through trade.
